چکیده

usefulness of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) as an expenT z n t a l animal was first pointed out about eight years ago (WILSON, ABBOTT and ABPLANALP 1959, 1961; PADGETT and IVEY 1959). These birds have steadily gained in popularity since then, but few quantitative genetic studies have been reported to date. The present investigation was designed to assess the response of Japanese quail to rapid inbreeding with the aim, at the outset, of deveIoping viable inbred lines for genetic and biomedical research purposes. Successive full-sib matings in the present study have led to the complete loss of reproductive fitness by the third generation (F = .5) owing to inbreeding depression. Mainly three traits are to be discussed in this connection: hatchability, viability and fertility.

Comparision of Direct and Indirect Response to Selection for Breast Weight in Japanese Quail

This study was carried out to investigate the direct and indirect responses to selection for four-week body weight (4 week body (wk BW)) and four-week breast weight (4 week breast weight (wk BRW)) and to determine the genetic contribution of reminder founders to the last generation. A total number of 351 birds were equally allocated to three lines, including two selected lines (S1 and S2 for BW...

Increased prenatal maternal investment reduces inbreeding depression in offspring.

Inbreeding depression refers to the reduction of fitness that results from matings between relatives. Evidence for reduced fitness in inbred individuals is widespread, but the strength of inbreeding depression varies widely both within and among taxa. Environmental conditions can mediate this variation in the strength of inbreeding depression, with environmental stress exacerbating the negative...

Inbreeding in Japanese quail estimated by pedigree and microsatellite analyses.

Accurately estimating inbreeding is important because inbreeding reduces fitness and production traits in populations. We analyzed information from pedigrees and from microsatellite markers to estimate inbreeding in a line of Japanese quail derived from a randombred line (QO) and maintained for 17 generations by pedigreed matings of brothers to groups of sisters. Pedigree data were used to calc...

Histomorphometric study of brachiocephalic artery of Japanese quail

Brachiocephalic arteries in quails are large arteries which are arising separately from the aortic arch. The aim of the present study was to determine the histomorphometric aspects of brachiocephalic arteries in the Japanese quail. The different layers of the brachiocephalic artery were studied quantitatively in 10, 20 and 60 days-old Japanese quail; (n = 6) and both sexes. Luminal diameter, th...

The Use of Sesame Meal in Diets of Japanese Quail

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different levels of sesame meal (SM) on performance and carcass characteristics of Japanese quail. One hundred sixty day-old Japanese quail chick were equally distributed into 16 cage pens and reared form 10 to 42 days of age. The treatments consisted of SM0, SM50, SM100 and SM150. The diet for SM0 treatment had no SM (control), while those ...
